W-I-P BAOR AFVs

I was hoping to have something completed for this update, as I was working on 3 very old Matchbox RAF Chinooks, and whilst they have reached a certain point, it was nothing worth photographing.

And then, as a long weekend is about to hit, I organised a little game and decided to use that as motivation to knock out some British Army on the Rhine AFVs - most of which I've had for a while, but for some reason they keep going to the back of the pile.

So just the one work-in-progress photo today:

Photobucket

As you can see there a 4 x Britannia FV432s (carrying 1 Mechanised Infantry Platoon in the game) a Britannia Chieftain (which will be added to a couple of very well painted Airfix ones I bought off Leigh - who bought them off someone else...to make a Tank Platoon) a couple of Airfix Scimitars - and in the back ground you should be able to make out two others - again beautifully painted - not by me - and bought from Leigh. These will make either 1 four AFV close recce platoon, or I'll split them into two elements of 2 vehicles each - not sure yet.

There is also a Cromwell? Spartan and a Cromwell Sultan. The Sultan - for whatever reason I'm not exactly sure - is one of my all time favourites. I just like its lines for some reason... The Sultan will be my HQ Command Vehicle, and the Saxon will be carrying an Air Defence Team.

In the background you can probably see a few Warriors - more on that at some point in the future.

I'm not 100% happy with how these look right now. I'm hoping I'll grow to like them more, the closer they get to completely finished - but there may be a bit of repainting in my future. With a bit more work though, they will suffice for the game on Monday.

After the game I'll try adding a few more cam nets etc to really make them pop.

Hopefully I'll be able to take a couple more WIP photos, then some completed photos and give you an AAR next week.

Thanks and have fun...

British Helicopters - Part 1 - Gazelle AH.1

For some reason the first vehicle I've completed for my British Army on the Rhine (BAOR) contingent turned out to be an Airfix Gazelle helicopter (excluding the two Harriers - which were of course RAF, not BAOR). This helo will be the first in what I envisage as being a little series of air support helo for my various forces - starting with the Brits.

I hadn't actually considered making a Gazelle at all until I read a couple of books - one I have mentioned before here on my blog the other I've not. The first discusses the Gazelle, mainly in terms of how they are used to assist TOW armed Lynx helicopters to find and strike at armoured targets.

The second is a book by Ed Macy - previously the pilot and author of "Apache" which describes one of his tours of Afghanistan flying an Apache Gunship. In his next book:

Photobucket

Macy talks about his training and why he originally chose to fly the Gazelle over the Lynx (before the Apache was even really being considered), the training and role of the Gazelle generally. He also describes how the Gazelle was used in Northern Ireland. Well worth a look.

More basic information abou the Gazelle can be found here at wikipedia

Airfix Gazelle - The Model

What can I say apart from this is a fairly simple kit - not the greatest model I've ever made, but certainly not the worst. It all fits together fairly well (the front canopy is a little too big) and has reasonable instructions that means you don't have to guess at anything (which is a nice change from ACE kits and some others).

Painting

Again this was fairly staright forward.

1. Undercoat - Citadel Black
2. Base coat - spray FoW Warpaint "British Armour"
3. Dark Green Bands - Vallejo Dark Green
4. Rotors and engine - Citadel Chaos Black
5. Pin Wash - pretty rough - Citadel Babab Black
6. Dry Brush - base coat green over pin washed areas - Vallejo Russian Uniform
7. Engine - Vallejo Gun Metal
8. Engine - Rotor area - Citadel Babab Black - Exhaust area - Cital Orygn Flesh
9. Perspex - Vallejo Luftwaffe Uniform
10. Perspex - brush on Citadel Gloss Varnish

I know the perspex isn't fantastic or even great, but I wanted to kept it fairly basic, and see how the Luftwaffe Uniform/Gloss varnish looked. I'll live with it.

Just in case you're wondering - I decided against the Grey/Green striped Gazelle that you often see and went with Green/Dark Green instead (obviously). I decided I wanted all my BAOR helo's to use this colour scheme instead. I'm pretty sure these colours were used at times and it will fit in better with the rest of the force as well.

So here are the pictures:

So basically I'm pretty happy with how this turned out and will now move onto the Lynx's.

Happy New Year!!!!

Well 2010 sort of fizzled out with too much on to spend any time doing modelling, gaming etc - more's the pity - so I didn't get to post anything in the last couple of weeks of December.

I had a very nice Christmas, thank you very much and it was nice to have a few days off in a row.

Pressie-wise, the Cold War Hot project did pretty well - with the following being added to my kit pile
3 Hasegawa M1 Abrams
2 Airfix 4 ton trucks
1 Airfix British 105mm gun set
1 JB Models 1 ton Land Rover
1 Trumpeter T-55 with Mine-roller
1 Trumpeter M2 Bradley

I also got some Liberation figures off Simon, plus a Liberation WMIK. Finally I managed to pick up another Dragon Leopard 2A4 and HMMWV with TOW, and a EasyModel (?) M113.

So all-in-all, I'm a pretty happy camper.

With the break I managed to re-read "Arc Light" by Eric L. Harry. I may try and knock out a quick book review - but I also got a copy of Kenneth Macksey book "first Clash" which I'm champing at the bit to read.

Finally, for my RAF regiment vs Spetsnaz mission, I managed to finish off an armed Land Rover. This isn't the actual finished version - but how I have finished it to enter a competition on the LibMin Board. Its a guntruck competition - so I hope this qualifies...

Here it is:

Not the best photos - so I quickly ducked outside and took these:

Its an Airfix LWB Land Rover - cut-down - with Liberation crew and a Liberation Milan mounted on the roll-bar. Bergens and Rolls are from Legend Productions and the cam net was made by me!

So anyway - I hope you all had a great Christmas and have a Happy New Year. This blog will continue - it may expand a little beyond its current Cold War Hot scope - mainly to cope with everything else that I tinker with - but I'm not 100% sure yet. I will start to add labels etc to make the blog more accessible, and soon give a year in review.

Take care and have fun...

The Second Harrier GR.3

I'm sorry that my first post for October is a little late - won't happen again! Well I hope not anyway. Last week was incredibly busy with the final preparation and then the running of the Flames of War Tournament over the October long weekend, here in Sydney. I think we pulled it off pretty well, but I had no time for life's little luxuries, like updating this blog. But now I do...

At various times in the past I've indicated that one of the projects I've been building for is a special mission involving a Spetsnaz attack on a Harrier hide. To finalise all the things I needed for the mission I had to finish a second Harrier GR.3 and a couple of British vehicles. Well I have all the vehicles now - just the matter of painting them up - and I've finished my second Harrier.

I am to get this mission and all the bits and peices that go into it, ready to be played in the next month or two - well before Christmas anyway.

I wanted the second Harrier to look different to the first one (that appeared in my very first post - I think)so I looked into some of the different weapon options available to the GR.3. I quickly decided that I wanted to go with a couple of Laser Guided Bombs. In reality this would mean that one of the Aden gun pods would be removed and replaced with a very similar looking laser designation pod - so I as able to simply leave the gun pods on the model as is.

As luck would have it I had to entertain the son of one of my wife's friends for a couple of days so we went down to my local hobby store and bought a couple of Airfix kits to make up together. He choose a Bucanneer - which came with two LGB. Once I managed to convince him that he really didn't need them, I was able to put them aside to add to the Harrier.

So without further ado - here it is

Photobucket

Now a couple of shots of the two Harriers together (just to prove I didn't cheat and redo the first one!)

No video links today - I think I nabbed all the best ones on my previous Harrier post - so if you want to check those out - go to the very first post.

Thanks and have fun

RAF Ground Crew Part 2

As I said earlier, at some point in the scenario, probably around the time they start getting shot at, the RAF ground crew will drop their spanners and pointy things and try and find their weapons and helmets.

The Airfix NATO Ground Crew set has a nice selection of figures in NBC suits with SLRs and helmets. These fit nicely. It also means that when I get some Liberation British figures for the RAF Regiment there will be a clear differentiation between armed ground crew and actual trained airfield defenders. Make sense?

So here are the armed ground crew:

Finally - here are the two pilots - the heroes of the hour (just ask them)

That's it for now. I have still to finish the Squadron Leader and Quarter Master - but so far I don't like the RAF Uniform colour I made up so I'll have to come up with something different before I can finish them off.

Have fun

RAF Ground Crew Part 1

Well this post finally brings me my blog totally up to date. I'm not sure necessarily if that is a good thing on not - as now I have nothing in storage to write about next week. But hey - as a log of my progress, at least it will now reflect the reality of 'now' rather than something I did three weeks ago.

As I may have indicated earlier there have been a few things driving mt blog. First of all, a chance to finish a new project, of which I've had a hankering to do for years, from go to woe, in the space of about a year. Second, and this is more of a motivator, is the Guild "Big Game" in August - which I will not be attending (it's in Ireland) - but will be trying to run a Sydney based alternative.

Thirdly, and this one has been pushing the direction of what miniatures and vehicles I've been buying/collecting/painting has been some writing I have done for Ambush Alley Games - in the form of some scenarios set in a "Third World War" kind of setting.

One of the scenarios involves a Spetsnaz raid on a RAF Harrier GR.3 hide - an attempt to eliminate some pilots and aircraft that have been providing effective close air support to NATO by bleeding the WARPAC forces as they advance to the FEBA.

For this mission (well the NATO side anyway) I needed a couple of Harriers and their pilots, four sets of RAF Ground Crew (1 set for each Harrier hide) and a similar number of figures that could be used as the Ground Crew who have now armed themselves with SLRs and donned helmets and are ready to defend their "base".

Lucky for me all there figures are readily available from the Airfix NATO Ground Crew set - which looks like this
Photobucket

A good review of the set can be found here at the Plastic Soldier Review

Eventually I'll also need some RAF Regiment types, some Land Rovers, a Sultan, a Saracen and a Scorpion - but they are for later down the track (as Leigh owns all that type of stuff so I can borrow it to play the mission).

The Spetsnaz team are already covered by the figures I've shown earlier - I'll be primarily using Liberation VDV troops and some others (all in Cam jumpsuits). The Spetsnaz chaps are all finished.

PAINTING

There is nothing special about the way I painted these. Simply a black undercoat, Tamiya Olive Drab spray, a Citadel Babab Black wash, and then drybrushed with Vallejo Reflective Green. (I’m sure any green would do!)

I did however come up with a cunning plan as to how I would approach this. Normally I paint about 12 figures at once. But as these were all pretty simple I decided that I would try and paint as many as I could at once. I had a spray painting stick to which I decided to stick a long piece of double sided tape. I would then place the figures on the tape – spray them and then paint them whilst all nice and securely stuck to the stick. I would then easily pop them off and have a bucket load of painted figures.

Here a pick of the painting stick on my desk:
Photobucket

The first flaw in my cunning plan was when I discovered that the stick really was too unwieldy, and was a bugger to manoeuvre around on my painting desk. After slapping on the wash, drybrushing the figures and painting the bases on the stick, I gave up and decided to go back to my more traditional method of painting.

Here the second flaw in my plan was revealed when I couldn’t get them off what now appeared to be my super effective double sided tape. NASA could use this stuff to stick tiles onto the Space Shuttle! In the end I had to lever each figure off with my Leatherman. It was extremely annoying and I ended up with bits of tape stuck to the underside of each base.

On to the next plan…

When I arranged these for the photographs I put them in batches of several of the same figures – so I could show front, back and facing all at the same time. In the views expressed by some, this turned out looking like some kind of choreographed Michael Jackson music video. All pretty amusing actually. I was in a fairly light hearted mood when I placed them up on the AAG forum and on the Guild – so I’ll replicate that here.

So here they are

That's enough Ground Crew in Noddy suits!

The tractor and bomb trolleys come from the Hasegawa "U.S. Aircraft Weapon Loading Set"

On to Part 2

Harrier GR.3

To get the ball rolling, I'm going to try and post up some photos of the first plastic kit I've made in about 20 years (actually more like 30 but that's too scary to consider).

This is an Airfix 1/72nd scale Harrier GR.3 with some assorted Airfix NATO Ground Crew (and a pilot).

First the Harrier

Some dramas there fitting on the photos - but now you can see the whole thing!

Here's some youtube clips I found interesting on the Harrier GR3

This one's a bit old - but still has some cool stuff in it.

Next up - some Soviet Armour!
